- Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011. - Location: Gig Harbor, WA

Hmmm... good question. It might. I may be able to try it, however I am leaving on a trip to LA shortly. If you ping me again on Thursday I may well be able to verify this for you. I am using a classic Edelbrock open air element but I want to see if I can get a Spectre Performance kit set up with cold air induction....

Did you ever try the stock air cleaner?

Re: Atomic EFI from MSD
I had to find the old air cleaner...
It looks like it fits with one interference issue that may be solvable. I have a right-angle AN fitting coming out of the throttle body and that is where the inteference is. This may be solved by either using a fitting that does not interfere or by modifying the stock base to eliminate the interference. The latter might be very doable, so the risk is fairly low. You can see the bright red and blue fitting in question in the shot below:

As you probably can figure out I felt the upgrade was well worth the loss of the stock AC. My eventual plan is to try the setup shown below which will allow me to do cold air induction (I note that the intake air temp in my car is often around 120 to 150 degrees so CAI will make a significant difference). The image and part are not the whole kit, I will have to buy the hoses that will extend to the cold air intake zones in the front. Assuming, of course, it all fits...

Thanks for checking on that. Sorry to hear about your motor. The cold air induction will be sweet when you get it done.

Re: Atomic EFI from MSD
I had my MSD Atomic fuel injection system installed and my mechanic is not able to get it working properly. I don't have all the details yet, but will need some help once I get my car back home.

Re: Atomic EFI from MSD
I just got my Cold Air Induction kit - unfortunately I had to go with a single inlet due to space considerations - but it will still look great and will bring in cool air.
I should have it installed later today and will post shots of what it looks like.
762 - I will PM you to work on your Atomic EFI. There are a number of things to consider and I will need a full report on what has been done. I will ask a few questions as well. Once we get it running it would be good if you would post a report on what we found.

I'm really interested in how this goes. I haven't been very interested in the EFI systems.... but you guys got my hamster wheel spinning. Thanks for the informative thread.

Re: Atomic EFI from MSD
No different. For the most part MPG is driven by the mass you are trying to move, and while cold starting is a vast improvement, I get around 12 MPG for my rural road cruising.
I have no idea if I get any more power as I am currently fighting a significant amount of detonation at WOT. This engine has always had this issue even though it has been rebuilt twice with two different cams, aluminum heads and now new pistons that should put CR between 9.5 and 10 depending on the deck height. I have to back the timing way off from the top to avoid detonation and there is no clear reason why this is happening. I plan on doing some dyno testing next year to see if I can track down the problem.
I did get a quick single cyl compression value of 160 PSI which I need to verify for the other cylinders as well as repeat after removing all the plugs. I may not have a reliable reading. This seems to indicate a fairly high CR which may be a factor, I have no actual number for the gasket thickness or deck height which is why my range is 9.6 to just over 10:1.
So while I love the EFI, it does not do much for fuel mileage near as I can tell. The benefits are in the cold starting and lower emissions along with the cool factor - you should see most peoples faces when I tell them it is fuel injected.

How much total timing are you running?
