"Rally Wheels"

Postby rt_toro_67 » Sun Jul 18, 2010 2:44 pm

Hi All,

I have a '67 that has hubcaps on it. I've thought since acquiring the car that it would spruce it up if it had "rally wheels". I believe that's what they're called, with the "spokes" exposed and a chrome trim ring and hub insert.

I was wondering where the heck I'd find a set of these wheels, then it occurred to me, why don't I see what's under the hubcap. See photo below.

Does anyone know, if I were to paint/plate the existing wheels, and find a set of rings and hub inserts, would I then have "rally wheels"?

I don't have any illusions that it will be easy or cheap to find the rings and center caps, but if my existing wheels will work if painted/plated, at least I'm 1/3 there instead of 0/3 there.

If anyone has an answer for this I'd be very appreciative. And as a follow up, if anyone has any insight on finding the hub inserts and rings, and how to paint/plate the wheels, that would be great too. I appreciate any help in advance.

Mark,

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. Can you clarify a couple of things?

1. Why would you say to use '66 caps and '67 rings for disk brakes when I have a '67 with drum? Just curious.

2. I see rings listed on E-Bay but not caps. This sale: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... MEWAX%3AIT is for the rings only. I've been watching for these for some time, if there's a listing I can't find, that would be great if you could point me to it.

Thanks again.

Another consideration for your wheels is powder coating, which I did to one of mine (the spare tire wheel in the trunk). Not many will like the color I selected. Powder coaters have hundreds of choices. I was extremely happy with the quality of Bulls Eye Powder Coating in Miami, FL.

Hi - David B i like the powder coated wheels , not the color, your idea is good . I saw your post on ist gen wheels toronado ; i do not agree that they are ugly . the 66 toronado had styling cues from the 37 cord 810, 812. fantistic ! i wouldn't use any other style wheel.

The spare tire wheel is actually dark blue. The flash photograph falsely lightened the color to a powder blue level. It appears much better in person.

The 4 custom wheels on my Toronado were all powder coated gloss black, and have an unbeatable look. The aluminum center caps were designed and fabricated at a local machine shop. I am extremely happy how the wheels came out, and I recommend powder coating.

Wow, those are some pretty mean looking wheels... Especially with those flat tires... Doesn't look like it has any branding labels o.o never seen that before.

If you lookup pictures oF "The Terrible Toronado" you can see a '66 with actual, factual rally wheels on it. Of course, they replaced the.axles, and added a 2nd engine and transmissoon in the rear to do it :P

I've got an extra set of drum brake beauty rings if ypu need them. I just got new disc wheels for my future upgrade. IIRC, they were in pretty good shape. If you're interested let me know and I can take some pictures.
