Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011.
Location: Gig Harbor, WA

This sounds like a classic Mondello service situation from what I read. In many cases, if nothing goes wrong, it is no problem dealing with Mondello. However, when something like this happens, caveat emptor.

While my experience has been good so far, I have observed hints of this kind of thing, so I am very wary now. I will only buy from Mondello when I feel they are the best source, if I can find alternatives I will use them.

Glad to hear you have improved your situation considerably!
I have my Fuel Injected Toronado. Life is good! 8-)

I just wanted to give all an update on the 66 Toronado engine. It has been a couple of years and the car now has some miles on it. By making my own metering disks and replacing the disks that came with the lifters that solves the oil issues. The engine runs great with no oil consumption, car is a blast to drive, and it turns a lot of heads on Cape Cod ( most people say they haven’t seen on in years). A year ago I purchased a 1937 Cord needing engine and transaxle work, that car is progressing. It has been fun to take them both out to shows and cruse nights as Cord is the last American front drive until the 66 Toronado came out.

..... Wow, with one side overhead 1/2 full of oil that's some 3-4 qts. between the 2 side, 1 qt in the filter, factor in the oil gallery's to the mains then rod, not much left in the pan no wonder the oil light was coming on and trashing the lifters ta-boot in one easy lesson! .... after reading this I presume that the HV oil pump is still in place, yes? .....

I have never know any one that has had good luck with HV oil pump in street use with out having to go through contortions ironing out the after effects!

Fortunately the oil light only came on as I turned a corner into my home, but it did surprise me as gee it’s got a 6 quart system. Oil pump was and still is just a stock pump not a HV. If you ever saw 8 fountains of oil coming from the pushrods at idle you would have been amazed. The problem was all in the lifters with the wrong metering disks. I added to my original post in order to help any future rebuilders to check their new lifters before using them. Sure caused me a lot of wasted time and money.
