Need a whole complete and fitting sending unit for a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. Mechanic is not helping me research or find anything and I do not know the correct specifications.

This is the last part I need before the car runs. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I don't see one listed but you might be able to make one from another GM car or Olds work by utilizing parts of your old one.

I tried the two websites. Unfortunately I no longer have the original sending unit. I'm not sure if the car had it to begin with or something happened to it along being towed to different shops.\

I bought a sending unit to a '67 Cadillac Eldorado, but they said that it doesn't fit. I'm trying to figure out what exactly about it doesn't fit.

I'm reluctant to share photos due to not as much being done as I had hoped. Bad mechanics who don't seem to do any work and just let my Toronado sit in their shop. I feel ashamed.

I'd contact Atwater Kent and see if he has any ideas for you. Maybe he has one laying around that he can rebuild. Same with Auto City Classic. He might be able to help you with modifying one for another vehicle.

Try salvage yards like French Lake 320-274-8497 or other junk yards

You might have luck asking someone on this site. Toronados are popular donors of engines for other Oldsmobiles. Maybe someone has one sitting around.

Aaahh, the ol' auto parts on the kitchen table routine. Been there. That grill looks good. Did you have it redone or did you just clean it up and polish it yourself?

I notice you still have the T3 headlights. If you plan on driving at night, put them in the trunk and buy some Wagner or Sylvania halogens. Those T3s are horrible compared to modern sealed beams halogens. ($7 or $8 each on Rock Auto)

I believe 66-67 sending units were the same. I'll have to look. They are actually pretty simple, and with some cleaning repair, should be operable again. I'm working on mine now and can send some pictures. If this was missing from your car, the tank had obviously been off previously, which makes one wonder what else was going on there. If it was me, I think the drum brakes are perfectly fine, but I would have changed over from single to dual master cylinder and perhaps added a proportioning valve for the rears.

Doc, Some idiot mechanic who was working on Metroid's car took the tank out and lost or discarded the sending unit. He now doesn't have one to rebuild or even compare to others for modification.

I agree about the brakes. I drive my car all the time and it's all stock. The drums are perfectly adequate when adjusted properly. Unless you're auto-crossing this beast, forget about discs.

I will get some pictures. Took apart a unit out of a 69 Toro and the design is different, though the basics are the same (I think 68-69 are the same). THe later design is better because it's easier to change the filter sock -- that is just done by removing the sending unit. YOu can't exchange the units between years though. Like all things Gen I Toro, there are many detailed parts that are only used for 1 or 2 years before a new design is introduced. Making parts availability a huge issue.

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is that USA Parts Supply has a fuel tank sending unit for your car. It's $250. Unfortunately, that isn't the bad news.

The bad news is that there is a $150 core deposit that you will not get back because the garage monkey lost/stole your original one.

$400 is a lot for a sending unit but if you can't fix your car without it, well...
