Sprucing up the brakes on my '92 Toro

Might as well make something good come out of the corona virus:

started here, obviously, with a completely fine set of brakes that probably had 30,000 more miles to go

Well Otto, I was kinda hoping to go a little faster....a least look it standing still:) I've got plans to replace the visually restrictive turbine wheels. I'm not a "keep it stock" guy.

That's a tricky proposition. There were a couple aftermarket wheels made by Western for Toros and Eldos back in the 70s and 80s but if you can't find any of those I think you'll end up having to have wheels custom made.

The biggest problem is finding a wheel with the correct backspacing and deep positive offset. Using the wrong wheel will result in wheel bearing wear and failure and possibly broken spindles.

Bolt Pattern 5 on 5" = 5 on 127 mm
Width 6 inches
Offset +3.25 inches = +83 mm
Backspacing 6.75 inches = 171 mm
Load Rating 1600 pounds

Thanks Otto but I have a 1992 that has a bolt pattern of 5x115mm with offset and bore that seem to be common with plenty of aftermarket wheel makers.

Any chance you pulled the pistons out of those calipers before you painted 'em?

You'd be amazed at the crust and "ick" that grows inside calipers. Last set I did ('92 or '94 K1500) the square-cut seals had a film of rust on them that I had to peel off with my fingernail. Once that was done, and the "guts" got cleaned-up, the rubber actually seemed to be in good condition--so I put 'em right back together.

Visible crust on rubber seal--peeled right off.

Caliper hardware cleaned up. Threads get anti-seize, sleeves get caliper grease.

Cleaned-up and going back together. Just need to slap the piston to the bottom of it's bore.
