66Toro Name That Part.

Postby Tuco » Fri Feb 07, 2020 4:25 pm

I’ve disassembled this entire car. After cleaning, refurbishing, painting and restoring every part and reassembling everything I almost have it done. It’s taken about 4 years.

I have two plastic pieces that I’ve forgotten where they go. They are obviously a left and right and mounted with rivets. Anyone know what they are?

Hi Tuco,

Those are the flaps that protect the headlights when the headlight doors are closed. It keeps debris from flying up from the road and hitting the headlights.

My car has the driver side installed but is missing the passenger side. I was given two good ones by a friend but haven't installed the missing one yet.

Please take pictures or let me know what's involved with installing it. I haven't looked closely but it looks like I might have to remove the grill and/or bumper to access the area.

I finally got a day to work on the Toro.

The bumper doesn’t have to be off but I haven’t put mine back on yet so it was easier without it. You do have to remove the grill and the chrome trim vee on the nose panel to gain access to the holes. I installed mine with 1/8 pop rivets with a backing washer.

Your car looks great. Thanks for the input on installing the flaps.

How did you/are you handling the eyebrows? They're painted body color, with matte black inserts, and chrome edges.

I had the front end off and disassembled so the eyebrows were off the car. I don’t think you can get them off without removing the headlight assembly. I could be wrong.

While they were off I polished and masked off the chrome. Then painted the inner part satin black.
Then masked off that and painted the rest with the exterior color. They turned out pretty good. The chrome part is so small it’s hard to mask perfectly.

The main purpose of those two flaps is so that when the headlights are retracted (down) they aren’t visible behind the grille. It keeps the hidden lights “hidden”. It has nothing to do with debris or otherwise. I’ve seen quite a few cars where those flaps are missing and it spoils the whole look of the front end IMO.

You're right about that T Bird.

I want to send Tuco my '66 so he can do the same thing to mine. Even though mine is in #2 condition, it doesn't come close to that one. Mine is Dubonet.

Yes. Tropic Turquoise. Thanks for the props guys!

Not a frame off but mostly disassembled. I went a lot farther than I originally planned. As always.
I’ve still got to paint and install the hood and replace some of the trim. Started her up yesterday and now working out all the bugs. So far the worst ones are the headlights and the reverse lights. I really don’t want to pull the rear bumper for one stinking backup light...
And the headlights aren’t opening. Need to find out what’s up there. I rebuilt the canisters so I know that’s not it. But the vac lines were all screwed up when I took it apart. So I’ll start there.

I think the turquoise is my favorite but Ottos purple one is a very close second.
