67 Toranado Rescue

Postby dreisena » Thu Jan 16, 2020 9:02 pm

Greetings! I recently acquired a 1967 Toranado. I don't know much about the older generations but seems like a pretty cool car. Wondering if you all might offer some advice and give me an idea on if it's worth restoring or better off parting out.

This car was parked in a barn and hasn't been running in about 15 years. It has rust around the wheels and inside the trunk is pretty rough. A few small spots the floor. Overall it's pretty straight but there would be a lot of rust to fix. I'm not too worried about the motor, I'm good at fixing those. Overall the car is complete and I have all of the trim and chrome. I thought I could get a good paint job, make it run good, and fix up the interior for around $10K. I don't plan to do a complete restoration with the underneath all restored but I'd make it mechanically reliable and look pretty good.

What are these cars worth when they're fixed up? Fix or part out?

Thanks for looking and let me know what you think!

That steering wheel is from a 1966 Toronado.

In really nice shape the car would be probably be worth $15-$20k.

There have been some completely restored, perfect examples that have sold in the $30s recently.

If you're doing the work yourself it's probably worth the effort. Check the rear frame rails for rust, though.

Also check the lower body behind the rocker trim. They all rust out behind there.

A decent paint job is gonna eat up most if not all of your $10k. Interior work is expensive too. I paid $3000 to have my seats done. Hows the carpet and headliner? And chrome? Then you’ve got brakes, tires, exhaust....

If your plan is to flip it I’d say forget it. You’ll be upside down in no time. If you want to keep it and can do the majority of the work yourself (including body work and paint) then go for it. They are beautiful cars and fun to drive. I believe that in a couple years they will finally get the attention from collectors that they deserve.

Thanks for the replies. I need to pull the rocker trim off and get it up in the air so I can check out the rest if the rust and get a better look at the floor. I put it in another barn while finding 15" tires that aren't rotted so I can roll it around in my garage.

I'm not planning on a get rich flip. I'd do most of the work myself. If I do restore I'd probably keep it for a little while and trade it on something else down the road.

I'm sure I'll check in for more input if I fix it up. Thanks again!

It is. The left front part of the bumper is dented but other than that the chrome is salvageable.

I started tearing into this car to restore. Not much else to do with the Covid craziness. Somehow it's nut rusted under the rocker panel trim. The worst part is the trunk floor is rusted through. I don't suppose those are available? I'll end up cutting out what's left and welding new sheet metal in and covering it. Waiting for brake parts to arrive and it should be ready to start soon,
