German imported -66 headlight problem

Postby Orchid70 » Wed Jan 01, 2020 1:31 pm

....sold to my friend here in Sweden resently.
So far there is not much we know of the car - it was juts started for the first time today.
Right hand headlight was not fully closed.
When I used my handpump to pull vacuum directly of the clock on top of the canister behind the headlight - it closed.
Me and my hubby are home working mechanics whom have NO knolage of these old American cars!! But we are the only ones near the owner - so we are stuck on trying to fix it - what ever will come up.
So - I would like to know couple of questions:
- Where would be the best place to find a or all the Service manuals for this car? (I know where I can purchase service manuals to all the newer cars - but these ancient cars , Im clueless)
- How fast should the headlight close/open? The left is operating - but it takes ca 20 seconds, if not more, for it to both go up and close. Is that normal?
- There are meny vacuum lines - some are not attached.
Ill attach some pics if someone would be kind and try explane if something important is missing.
The car was purhaged unseen, unheard. No rear lights are working. The fuse holders are rusty (see pics).

More from under the dash.....
There are three on/off buttons.
The cut off for the plus-wire is the latest addition.
What the push button or the rocker button are for, I have no clue - do you know?

Try eBay for the Service Manuals for the car.

The headlights should not take 20+ sec. to open or close. Sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Check all the lines for cracks or loose fitting.

As far as the switches, it’s impossible to tell from the pictures what they go to. They were added on after manufacture so it’s anybodys guess.

Maybe the wiring diagrams in the service manual can help.

Thank you Tuco

I saw somewhere a tip on this site:
https://wildaboutcarsonline.com/
I paid 35 Dollars to get access to their library and there was the whole Service book for 1966 Toronado.
With the vacuum roting to the headlamps, as well to the air conditioning, fuses and everything else.

Its easier to start fault searching with the roting in hand.

You should be able to find the Chassis Manual for about $20 on ebay.

The lights normally take a few seconds, not 20. When I bought my car one light would not close. It turned outto be adisconnected vacuum line at the "T" underneath the vacuum reservoir.

You'll just need to trace all the lines and check for leaks/cracks, etc.

Thank you
Thats what Im going to be doing - taking off battery and the reservoir and after that - follow the lines.
When the headlights work - its time to clean the fuse holder and trace the problem for the rear lights and the horn. There is propably a lot more - but those will be the important parts for registration inspection.
A friend who is into Cadillac - recommended to change a transmission filter - IF there is one. I told the car owner to start reading the menuals Ive sent him (all of them and I realize it was good to have them - because he knew nothing of the car he has bought, never even started it himself) to search for eventual transmission filter. He is not good in English, thats why I am asking all the questions =)

Im thankfull for your answers!

How do I find out what the transmission in this car is called?
Is it THM425?
Just have a lot on my plate ... so would love if I didnt need to search for it for hours.....

Yes. All '66 Toronados have the same transmission. TH425.

It's essentially the same transmission used across the GM lines known as the TH400. The difference is that it's cut into two pieces in order to lay next to the engine and driven by a chain off the back of the crankshaft.
