66 Toro engine ID

Postby cadtbird » Wed Nov 14, 2018 5:47 pm

I have purchased a 66 Toronado, and am trying to figure out if my engine is original or not. It has all of the characteristics of an original 66 425 other than the fact it is not blue. The engine is pretty weathered appearance-wise, but is red with gold valve covers. The engine number on the right head is N744644T. The air cleaner is a dual snorkle, but is a weathered black color. It has the small circular stainless steel part under the wing nut. Thanks for you input.

I have seen a 66 Toronado with a red engine installed. I only have access to photos so I can't check the numbers. My research shows that a red 425 would be a low compression engine. Do a Google search for Oldsmobile engine identification and you will find a lot of information. The code on top of the timing chain housing is a good source as is the code stamped on the oil fill tube. Let us know what you find.
