Engine and transmission mounts

Postby NRGF » Sat Oct 06, 2012 10:54 am

Gentlemen,
I need new engine and transmission mounts for my 1969 Toronado are there any do’s or don’ts before I start? Any ideas for the best supplier? All advice and or comments gratefully received.

I'm thinking that there's no such thing as "new" trans mounts. You buy "good used" or send yours off to be rebuilt with fresh rubber.

That MIGHT be the case with the motor mount, too.

At least, I don't know of any source to buy them from.

Hi Schurkey,
Thanks for the quick response, it’s the answer I was expecting but hoping not to get but lots of other people here must have had the same problems so perhaps someone has another solution.

Rockauto.com actually has a transmission mount listed in their catalog. It's a whopping $3.11... so dunno about the quality... still, can't go wrong for that price!

Hi Twilight Fenrir,
The Rockauto.com transmission mount is the Transmission Oil Cooler Mount. However they do have the motor (engine) mounts for $11.17 each but are they correct? http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/searc ... vi=1346396 motor mounts look the same so I guess they should be correct but they are currently unavailable.
Fig 6B-108 in the service manual is a little confusing it shows front and rear mounts that all there is? I am currently unable to get under the car and take a look. I was hoping to be able to just order the mounts then get them fitted but like most jobs on the Toronado its not quite that simple.

Hey NR,
I gotta tell yeah…you are 100% correct when it comes to Tornado’s being a bit different! I just installed my rebuilt tranny yesterday and I used a engine hoist to drop it in. Every other old car I have ever worked on you lifted it up through the bottom!

My rebuilt 455 comes back next week..it’s only been at the machine shop since December!

Concerning the motor and tranny mounts there is three. On engine mount at the front of the motor and two rear transmission mounts at the very rear of the transmission. It’s pretty much reverse of what a conventional rear well drive car would be of this vintage. They usually had two motor mounts and one transmission mount. I was fortunate that my mounts were fine. I think you can send your mounts to Steele Rubber Products for rebuilding.

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the info.
So now I’m looking for 1969 engine and transmission mount cores to send to Steele Rubber.
Does anybody know if other years will also fit? I have been scouring the internet for many hours but these things are as rare as hen's teeth.

Hi Neil, I have a decent motor mount that I blasted off--it is probably good enough to use as is. I'm quite sure I have some trans mounts around here somewhere too but I just have to locate them. They are off of a 1970 but they are the same as 1969. I'll let you know what I have in a couple of days.
