455 front main seal

Postby taddpole » Tue Jul 03, 2012 4:03 pm

My dad had told me once he had a parts guy give him a ford front main seal for his 455. It worked really well. Has anyone ever heard of this? Any ideas of who makes the best seal?

The front main seals on 330/350 and 400/425/455 is of a double lip seals style the outer keeps crap out the inner keep the oil in and seals at the damper (and If memory servers) SB and BB are the same. I know of no other GM or for that mater Ford or Chrysler that the will inner-change with the front.

That said however ... in lieu of the traditional rope seal used on the Olds SB BB a Ford 460 rear main lip seal will inter-change with the Olds BB rear main as a alternative to the rope and with good results. To date I know of no such alternative for the Olds SB

I thought the small block could use a different Ford seal. 6 popper or Y-block, perhaps?

Very possible, There may be another available from a different manufacturer i.e. Ford-Chrysler that works in the SB olds rear main, or front for that mater that I am not aware of or it heard spoken off. I can only speak to the 455.

For what it is worth I did check, Rock Auto does show the same front seal for both SB/BB as Timken #472082.

This is not to say that a front or rear is not available, someone may know of if by its OEM application/part number, though when crossed referenced may wind up back at the same place that being Timken, National what have you.
