Just a bit curious... did you ever replace the exhaust manifold head gasket? Pinhole leak in the gasket can create a ticking that sounds quite similar to a sticking lifter or valve... Had that problem with both my El Camino's, and I believe it's what's causing the ticking on my '66 Toro.
