Fuel Tank sock... 66 Toronado

Postby Twilight Fenrir » Thu Jul 21, 2011 7:11 pm

Well, I dropped my gas tank on my '66 Toro, it had a pinhole leak.

I patched it up, and for good measure I painted the outside completely with POR15, and used their fuel tank sealer on the inside.

Unfortunately.... I didn't think about the fuel tank sock when I poured the sealer in. And, now it's ruined.

I had heard that GM still had NOS ones for alot of cars, but their catalogs don't go back that far, even if they had them, there's no way to look them up.

Went to o'Reily's to see what they had, and they've got these funny little wick-like filters that go on the end for a modern system. I'd be happy to use one of these, but none of them have an appropriate sized neck on them.

With my idea tank running towards empty, my last option that I can think of, is to go buy a washing machine lint sock and stick it on there with a hose clamp :P Really, it's not too different from what was on there, except maybe a little larger perforations. There's still the filter on the carb to catch what gets through that. And, with a sealed tank, there shouldn't ever be any debris in there...

Any other options I've overlooked? Or does anyone happen to have the original GM part number for this? Also, if you have a lookup for these things, could I get the part number for the proportioning valve on a '69 Toronado with front disc? I'm doing a conversion, and this is the only part of the equation I don't own.

Thanks :D

Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011.

Good thing I remembered you are a bone stocker... ;) I almost recommended the Wilwood part but that is not stock. Inline Tube should have what you need. Not certain the first image below is exact, but the second is for sure; I bought one and it is on my car now. There are two different bits, not sure which one you need. If you do not have the black on you will need it, and the first one doubles as a distribution block and bad brake sensor.

Well, I found the fuel tank sock, GM still had them new, after I got the part number from elsewhere. Should be at the dealership for me this morning :D

As for the prop valve... Having read that very handy information on inline tube, I realize the stock system had as many as 3 components... and I really don't want that... I'd like to get one of the combination valves from 71 and later.

This might be what I'm looking for I think.

Also, found this one... which looks like it comes with a bunch of extras, and costs less :D Including the lead wire for the brake failure light...
