Transmission contol rod...

Postby Twilight Fenrir » Thu Jun 02, 2011 3:29 pm

My '66 toro has never accelerated right. It's just had no power. I got a friend from work to step on the pedal while I watch the throttle linkage, and it is blaringly obivous something is wrong.

The rod that connects the throttle to the transmission control module hits its stop before the primaries are even fully open. Much less the secondaries. Removing the rod from the lonkage, the throttle opens much further, getting the secondaries about 75% open, but I run out of cable before it opens all the way.

I don't think my carb is orriginal to my toro, the numbers differ slightly. Though it is from a '66 oldsmobile.

Do I have to buy a toro carb? Or can adjustments be made?

Okay, I found how to adjust the transmission rod in my service manual. Still trying to figure out how to adjust the throttle cable though.

Well, I definitely have a problem... in order for the rod to kick on when the throttle is all the way open, it must be as short as it possibly can be. But in order to not interfere with throttle at idle, it needs too be as long as it can possibly be.

For now, I took the rod off so I can get full throttle. I left the switch in the normal cruising range though.

I had the exact same problem, but I solved it this weekend!

Try finding a diffrent hole in the carb for the transmission
control lever, it should line up with the throttle cable.
My was just underneith the throttle cable holeand I couldnt see it
right away, someone put in a diffrent hole on the carb meaning
that the secondaries would not open...I can take a pic of
my setup if you want.

Oh geeze... I'd never have seen that hole under there... My rod still doesn't fit, but I suspect with a mild adjustment to its bending, it should work fine. Thanks for the pointer.
