66' Toro CV axle

Postby Ourkid2000 » Tue Jun 06, 2023 3:54 am

Good day all,

My 66's passenger side CV axle should probably be replaced. I'm not sure if I trust the offerings from Rockauto, etc. Does anyone have a part that actually fits correctly? Just trying to avoid the hassles of ordering incorrect parts.

Thanks!

The cv axles from Rockauto are ok and cheap. But china-man often not proper redone em at the rubber boots. I had some problems with the boot strips and must change. Very less space for free running when the cv axle sit in the hub. If the rubber boots fit correctly they are good for many thousand trouble free road miles.

Hi Roland, thanks for the reply.

I understand you have a 67'? From what I understand, most 67's have a different style CV axle than the 66's. I really don't know the difference but there's definitely something different between them.

I wonder what are the different should be. I had also a 66, no different to 67 (and I believe no dif till 1977 - GMC RV´s use em too). RH cv axle has original a vibration damper. Those aftermarket ones didn´t have it. I have never found a distinction while driving.

Well, I'm not too sure of the differences other than what I can see in the parts catalog (see my attached photos from my 1971 parts catalog).

It looks like the 66's and the early 67's used the same design which has a round inner flange. This is referred to as the "1st type". Later, in 67, they went to the "2nd type" which looks a bit different.

Now, I have no idea if these are in any way interchangeable. Later parts catalogs (1975) list them under PN 7808130 (RH) and 7807559 (LH) but this shows as including an adapter for 1966 "1st types". I have no idea what that means.

I don't have any particular preference with any of this other than I would like to order up a CV axle that will bolt right in and not have me standing there with a part that won't work. Just trying to avoid some aggravation I suppose. The offerings on RockAuto actually look like the 1st type to me, rather than the more popular 2nd type but the PN they list (GM8111) doesn't match up with anything I've been able to find as correct.

Can only say that Rockauto sells for all Toronado years the same CV axles with identical order number. Yes, its more than possible, that Oldsmobile changed the CV axle design with time. Done it more easier to maintain maybe. But you can order an CV axle from RA and send it back if it does n´t fit. No risk...

Yes that's a good point. I could order one up and see how it works out.

I suggest sending your original units to a rebuilder like Cardone.

Look up Applied GMC (new name now but I can't remember it). They offer rebuild services for the cv axles. Jim is an expert on GMC Motor Homes which utilize Toro drivetrain. He's extremely helpful.
