Hello,

It looks like I have to replace or repair a rear window regulator & motor on my 1967 Toronado: It will not open from the fully closed position

I've had the back seats & elbow rest panels out a few times, and have gained access to the bottom of the regulators. Once loosened from their bottom mounts (3 bolts) they work fine; but upon retightening they'll fail after a while. I believe it might be a dead spot on the motor armatures; they don't appear to be seizing.

I hesitate to remove the interior upper quater panels in order to fully remove the regulator. The manual seems to indicate that window moldings and the rear deck have to come off.

I wonder if anyone has had experience with removing a regulator (or just the motor). It would be appreciated.

The 1967 Fischer Body Service Manual does give some advice on the topic of removing the regulator assembly (Page 7-24, REAR QUARTER WINDOW REGULATOR ASSEMBLY (MANUAL OR ELECTRIC) - "A, E, F, X & Z" HARDTOP AND CONVERTIBLE STYLES.

Is it possible to repair these motors? My ‘69 front passenger window stopped working a couple of months after I bought it and it sounds weak. I believe the motor is somewhat universal with other gm vehicles of the time, but I’m not too sure.

I bought a new window motor from O'Reilly auto parts for my '66, so I would think they would be available for yours.

Most window motors I have dealt with that work slow or partial and get stuck have been a problem with old grease. The grease/lube gets old and hard. I have had much success with removing and disassembling the motors, cleaning out all the old grease and re-lubing them. Almost always they will work like new when reassembled.

It saves a lot of $$$.

Ok, we will check first the window motors on the incoming Toronado project. The owner mentioned they've acting up before being parked for about a year now. Got to finish the brake pads installation and tire mounting on the truck this week before we can take her in. There are a couple of rust spots to address as well.

I made progress as a result, and was able to repair the window mechanism by repositioning the mechanism a little akimbo before re-tightening the bolts.
I figure there might have been a dead spot on the motor armature, or the rails & guides were just getting stuck in the same old place - full closed. They both work like a charm now.
