What was the original "group" size battery for a 1966 Toronado?

I think it originally came with a Group 27.
I'll see if they have the size listed in the owner's manual. It's not listed in the FSM.

Well, the Owner's Manual isn't any help. Battery 12 volts Delco DC-12

Batteries Plus and Advance Auto both list Group 27 as OEM size.

I'm going to change my battery before the end of the month. It looks like my 1990 will only take a Group 78 size as an "Exact Fit" according to Advance auto parts. What's interesting is that according to their website, the 66 Toro will take more different sizes.

BTW what brand/type of battery do folks here recommend?

Exide and Interstate generally receive high ratings from Consumer Reports

All my vehicles are daily drivers and I keep all of them on Battery Tenders. The Interstate battery in my Toronado is nearly 7 years old. A friend of mine has a battery in his 1955 Thunderbird that's been there since 1993. It's been on a Battery Tender the entire time and is always at full charge with no deterioration.

If you don't want to keep your batteries on a tender, an AGM battery will last 7 to 10 years.

The 1975 Delco Remy brochure says all Oldsmobile 455 to have a R89S battery, 420 CCA.

In my case, I have a Delco Group 34 660 CCA that fits my 69 battery tray perfectly.

Measuring my old and replacement tray that I purchased from Fusnick, the largest battery dimensions can be 6.75" wide x 11.75" long. A group 27 battery is 6.8125" wide x 12.06" long and won't fit the tray. The battery groups that comes closet to fitting the tray are 24F, 34, 56, 63, & 64 most of which are not common sizes.

As previously stated, Firestone website recommends a Group 24F; Interstate recommends a 27; O'Reilly recommends a 27; and Batteries.com recommends a 27.
