aluminum dash faceplates

Postby Hwy78Cruiser » Mon Apr 06, 2020 7:02 am

The aluminum faceplates on my '66 are slightly to pretty darned scratched up. I removed them and am now trying to figure out the best method for refurbishing them. I did find a way to replace the letters, called dry transfer (e.g.: https://decalprofx.com/index.html ).

However, how best to ?polish? and/or ?re-anodize? these faceplates This material is thin, I could easily imagine buggering it up. I saw something about dipping them in caustic, but that doesn't seem like a good way to start. Pics attached.

Ideas, experience with these??

hello mine were the same i couldn't even read the letters
so i removed them and believe it or not i just sanded until they looked new
in one direction only.
then for the lettering i had a vinyl letter guy make me the vinyl letters covered the bezels in vinyl 'peeled the letters away sprayed them black
then carefully peeled the rest of vinyl off
then i clear coated everything
so it would last
looks perfect

Impressive, thanks. I have a couple buggered spares that I can practice on, so I'm gonna go for it. Would you mind sending pics?
