Hi everybody !
So I'm still working on my 66 and this are going well, but there is one point that needs to be fixed: the headlights.
Of course, there is always these steps you need to look on if you have a problem :
- Check all vacuum lines
- Check the headlight switch
- Check both canisters
- Open the canisters and check if the spring is still in one piece and not heavily corroded
- Check if the rubbers are still in a good shape
That's usually where you have a problem... water sometime goes inside, then stay under the rubber and corrode the axle and can deform the rubber and not keep vacuum. That was my case. I also had a spring broke in two pieces.
So I got a new spring from the Toro guy, thanks again ! But for the rubber, nothing, no website, no clues... so I decided to solve this myself.
Some people change the system with a electric actuator but I want to keep it original.
Here is a solution you can try :
- Open the canister that doesn't work by removing the six screws on the top, be careful as the spring inside is very strong and might damage the cover if you don't hold it strongly while removing the 2 last screws.
- Remove the axle if it didn't jumped away and the spring
- Cut the old rubber and remove it completely
- Remove all the rust and clean the part, you can even paint it if you want
- Use the file provided to print the part that will hold the o-rings in place
- Use glue or any adhesive that holds to plastic and can cover enough so air won't pass between the two pieces
- Let it dry completely and add the two o-rings on it
- Put everything back together and test if the canister holds vacuum
- It may let some air pass through it but not much
- Try on the car !
Regarding the shopping list, you will need:
- Glue, I used the Gorilla construction adhesive
- A bag of o-rings, I choose those https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07DGBYFVB/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but any others with the same size should do

- If you don't have a 3d printer, you can find online website that can print it for you and send it to your home.

I'm still in the process of trying it on my car, I have things to finish first but I wanted to share this with you.

What is the green part made out of? Is it hard plastic? What did your old one look like?

Did you send the original part to a 3d printer place?

Sorry for all the questions. Here's another one. At the link you provided, are there supposed to be plans for the the 3d printing? I found only the photos you posted when I tried to open the files.

When you open the website, there is a blue box to the top right of the photos labeled "download". Hit this button and it will automatically download a .zip file to your computer's download file folder.

Yes, the green part is made of platic. There was no old plastic part, before it was just a big piece of rubber. I have a 3d printer at home that I use to make platic parts. It is ABS in my case, I find it more resistant.
On the website, there is a button "Download all files" and you should have a .stl file. This is the 3D model that is used to print the part.
If you don't have a 3D printer, you can try an online website or maybe we can figure something out.
Let me know if your need more info, I'll try to make instructions simplier !

Thanks Francois, I'll look again but I don't recall seeing that file. Fortunately my headlights go up and down properly albeit slowly.

I just want to save the information for the future if/when they quit on me.

So you designed this part yourself? The original part is a single rubber plunger with no O rings? That's pretty cool. Yes this does seem to be an improvement. If the O rings wear out they can be easily replaced.

I just looked again and there is no file with an .stl suffix among the downloaded files.

I opened all of them and they are JPG images of thumbnails, etc.

Hi Otto, yes this is my design. My goal was to adapt pieces that are easy to find and replace in case it breaks again.
I checked again on the website and the stl is there, included in the zip file but I put it here also so anyone can take it from here too.
If I have time, I'll post a video of the update process from an old one to the new.

Whatever that is, my computer won't open it. It was the same on the download from the website.

I get an error message in a box titled: Invalid Public Key Security Object File

The message in the box reads: This file is invalid for use as the following: Certificate Trust List.

I have no idea what any of that that means.

Try with a different software, for exemple 7-zip or Peazip to open the zip file. It should work
