1966 throttle cable assembly

Postby Kollege » Wed Oct 02, 2019 12:35 pm

Hi my friends,

on my 1966 Toronado the throttle cable has too much play (about 0,43") so the secondary throttle plate of the Quadrajet opens only about 10% (no full power, no kickdown).

I attached two pictures. Can anyone please give me a hint if the whole throttle cabel assembly (pic 1) on my car should look like this and if the holding plate (pic 2) is original? I assume there is a part missing. Or send a pic how it should look like? Thanks in advanve.

Martin

1966 Toro Q jets use air pressure to open the secondary air valve without a mechanical connection. At full WOT it will open due to lower air pressure inside the carburetor than ambient atmospheric pressure.

Is there a mechanical linkage on the passenger side of the carb connected to the air valve?

My car is not here at the moment so I can't look to compare. This topic has been discussed before with photos. Search this forum. At first glance it looks like you're missing a little plastic sleeve thing on the throttle cable but I don't think that should cause a problem.

Regarding the kickdown; that too has been discussed in several threads also with pictures.

You can test your kickdown switch by turning the key to on and manually moving the throttle from idle to WOT. You should hear the electric switch click twice as you move it toward WOT.

Is your kickdown rod connected in the hole below the throttle cable? Your kickdown rod looks severely bent. I can't look at mine for comparison, though.

Here is a picture of the kickdown rod. Yours is definitely bent more than this. The first bend is correct the second bend has made yours short. That might be keeping the throttle open more at idle and/or not moving the kickdown lever far enough to work.

Kollege,
The small throttle return spring should fit inside of the larger one so that they are connected in the same holes.

The two spring are a security. Those are design to push back the accelerator when you remove your feet from the pedal.
Original design have only one of these, but if it happened to brake, you car will keep accelerating without any possibility to lower it down.
More recent car must have two springs.
François.

OK. Your carburetor 's air valve opens via atmospheric pressure instead of via mechanical linkage like the later model Q Jets.

The only way you can see it in operation is manually open the throttle to full WOT with the engine running and watch the valve open.
