Steering Column/Turn Signal Switch *Again*

Hello Members, I appreciate any insight anyone can give in advance. Unfortunately as of August 2019, I have been coming back to the forum with the same issue for 10 years...

I have a '67 Toronado with the tilt-telescoping column. Ongoing, continuing electrical problem with the turn signal switch-no brake lights. Several years back, an expert friend of mine tested to determine the contact for the brake lights within the switch had worn down and that was the issue. We dripped some solder to build up the connection, and this worked! Unfortunately only for about two years. So we know the solder trick is not long term, and of course as we all know the switch is not available. And yes, I bought a second tilt-telescope column many years ago with an allegedly tested & working switch, but it was not working.

Our next angle here is to try to find a standard non-tilt/telescope column, because a brand new switch is made for that column (which I have purchased). We are hoping if we can find a suitable non t/t column, it will fit the car and we have the switch. The bitterest of ironies is:

- Based on my research, it seems most '67's must have had the tilt-telescope column, as I've had no luck finding a standard column. So for the most popular column, the switch isn't manufactured.
- The switch for what seems to be a rarer column is manufactured!!

I didn't expect the non t/t switch to fit, and it does not.

After all of that, the simple question for the group is... does anyone know what non t/t column for other GM cars would fit the '67 Toronado? This would be extremely helpful. Cutlass...Chevelle.....etc. Anyone have any idea?

Thank you!!

Roy T

It seems as though a '66 Toro column would fit.

As for another column, I'd try the Eldorado. It's the only other car built on the Toro platform that's also front drive.

John Dorcey has 50 1966 - 1970 Toro parts cars. Perhaps he can find a column, switch , or both.

I have succeeded in swapping columns between Toro, Eldo, and Riv on my 79.
Your year Riv was not RWD, but I would expect any 67 tilt column switch would
work. The difference I have seen is the metal foot that bolts to the floor, extra
contacts for cornering lights, and variations in the type of shift linkage.

I would not expect solder to stand up to service as an electrical switch. I
am surprised the non tilt does not work.
good luck, Bruce Roe

I have a full '66 steering column sitting in the garage, but it has the tilt and telescopic features. I will be using the steering wheel on it for my '67, but the rest of it I'd probably let go. Let me know if you're interested.

You may want to email rt toro directly regarding the steering column.
