66 WOT question

Postby Tuco » Thu Apr 04, 2019 6:53 pm

I’ve been restoring my 66 for the past year. I was originally going to just paint it and drive it but it seems I can’t leave things alone. My wife says it’s a sickness. Oh well...

It’s coming along nicely. Just got the engine compartment done other than inner fenders but I’m having some issues.

For one, someone had changed the original carb with a Holley. I’ve bought a fresh 4mv qjet and put it on. I have to run a 1/2” spacer to get the linkage to clear the intake. But with the throttle cable in WOT it’s just barely starting to open the secondaries. I’ve disconnected the tranny switch linkage so that’s not interfering.

I’ve read thru the old threads here to get some insight but I’m not finding a solution so far.

Have any of y’all had this problem with the throttle cable travel?

Ok, Are you sure the Q-Jet is for a '66 Toronado? GM made a lot of different versions of the Q Jet for various makes and models. Some of the differences are not visible from the outside such as different needle valves, etc. For example, my '66 Toro came with a Q Jet that upon rebuilding was determined to have needle valves installed for an Olds 330 engine instead of the Toro 425. Others have different linkages.

The '66 Toro carb is one of the first Q Jets. The earliest ones do not have manual linkage to open the secondaries. The secondaries open at WOT due to the change in air pressure inside the carburetor as fast moving air in the intake reduces air pressure below atmospheric pressure allowing the secondary air valve to open.

It can only be witnessed with the engine running while you or manually move the linkage or someone else floorboards the pedal to WOT and see the air valve pop open.

Contact Tim Hewitt at Daytona Parts Co ( 386-427-7108 ) if you have any questions about your carb. He is an expert and knows virtually every carb made and is more than happy to talk you through setup and diagnose problems.

Thanks Otto. I’ll call him. Hoping to post some pics later today.

I’ve talked with you before. Years ago on CLC modified and misfits. Nice to see you here!

Just thought I’d post some pics in case someone sees something obvious.

Does your carburetor have a manual air valve linkage? Without going out to look at mine I can't tell. I don't remember what mine looks like but it operates via atmospheric pressure difference.

Have you had the engine running yet? It looks really nice.

Is Tuco short for Tuco Benedicto Pacífico Juan María Ramírez (known as "The Rat")?

I’m pretty sure this carb is not the right one. I tried calling Tim per your recommendation but he’s out till Monday.

The car was running on the old Holley but not well. I haven’t tried to start it yet with the new one. Thanks for the props! I’ve spent a bit of time on it.

Si, si, Tuco Ramírez. “When you hafta shoot, shoot. Don’t talk”!

Hey Otto. Any chance you could post a picture of your carb?

Or anyone else who has the original Q-Jet post a picture of theirs. That may give me some direction.

Thanks!

Your carb is not the original# for this year. You need a Rochester model #7026250. My car had the wrong carb and I ended up having to buy two cores in order to make one good one. Google "Quadrajet 7026250 and you'll find them. It might take a while, but having the correct carb with the correct linkage, choke, etc.is worth it.

Yes, Willys is right. Now that I see the two together.

Yours has the air valve linkage of the later model QJets. Also, yours appears to be mounted on a spacer. It should be directly on the manifold. The throttle linkage is also completely different.

In case you're wondering, it was that color when I got it.
