Gear Select Problem on a 1987 Troféo

Hey guys,

I've recently run into some strange probem with the gear select switch, as the repair manual names it: When the gear shifter is in position P, R, or N, all gear indicator lights start blinking, and after a couple of seconds, the following error message appears: Gear select problem. The gear shifter itself works normally, though, so parking and backing up is not an issue. Only the error message puzzles me a bit.

This issue is reproducible: It appears every time I put the shifter into one of the abovementioned positions.

May the small electrical switch mounted on the right side of the shifter be broken or the control cable worn out? The problem is that the official sources for parts don't have the switch in stock, and a used part dealer told me the other day that I've gotta buy a complete shifter.

Thank you for any useful hints.

I'm not familiar with cars that new but perhaps you can buy a replacement switch from a junkyard.

This site searches hundreds of yards around the country.

I've found that it's best to search for yards that have your particular car, then call and speak in person about the specific part.

OK, I've now got the request from a parts "broker" who needs the exact part # of the shifter, but I can't find it on the part itself. Any ideas?

Unless you can find a GM/Olds Master Parts list online I don't know how you'll be able to do that.

That seems kind of silly for a 30 year old part, though. Can't you take a bunch of pictures and email the guy? He ought to be able to tell if it's correct or not.
