EFI - best system?

Postby sworth66toro » Wed Apr 25, 2018 8:33 pm

I'm in the process of getting my engine rebuilt and was thinking of converting to EFI. For the folks that currently have EFI, what system do you have and would you change it or do other upgrades at the same time, like distributor? I've seen articles on the Atomic system, but is this the latest/greatest?

Thanks in advance
steven

Be careful of the height of the EFI system. You have a depressed manifold and the throttle linkage may not work without a spacer. Also you have a spread bore manifold if you are stock. I do not think the EFI systems work on spread bore only square bore make sure you check. Other things to think about is your air cleaner will not fit as it is depressed also and will not fit with the HEI or the EFI.
If you do not want to modify your hood think long and hard.

Mr toro Is right. You can't even find an aftermarket carb that will fit under the hood properly.
If your Q-Jet needs a rebuild, send it to Tim Hewitt at Daytona Parts company. You won't be disappointed.

EFI - best system?

There are a lot of different EFI systems been fitted to old engines. MAP or
MAF based, throttle body or port injection, mapped ignition timing, knock
sensors, OX sensors, idle air motors, batch or sequential injection, saturated
or peak and hold injectors, to name a few. If you haven't studied the options,
I wouldn't recommend it.

I have worked on and off with varied EFI systems since 1990. A lot of owners
describe how they have struggled with theirs for many years. Some others
don't get all the Ts crossed and Is dotted, and settle for inferior performance.
I wonder why owners want to convert a good running setup to a new can
of worms to be mastered?

What I do recommend, is install an HEI ignition system, and an internally
regulated alternator, if you don't have them already. The HEI might need some
recurving, and an air cleaner from a late 70s Toro for clearance. 77-78 also
use a special EGR mount to clear the air cleaner. good luck, Bruce Roe

This company converts your existing distributor to HEI. That way, your setup looks stock and there are no clearance issues.
