Replacing heater core

Postby Toronadotrofeo » Tue Nov 07, 2017 7:13 am

Hi all toro guys
I’m at the final stage of my toronado adventure
I have taken dash apart the cluster is out the ashtray and glovebox are also out
The only thing left is the steel part of the dash
I’m gong to replace the ducts because of the old moldy smell and replace the firewall insulation
I was wondering if this was a good time the dig Further and replace the heater core and at that point clean the heater box as well
Any suggestions

Replacing heater core

Postby bcroe » Tue Nov 07, 2017 1:12 pm

If the heater core is inside the car (like my 79), this would be a great time
to install a new heater core. I consider this a 19 year maintenance item,
because that is about when mine fail. Heater cores located in the engine
compartment are a whole lot less difficult to change. Bruce Roe

Hi Bruce,

The FSM for my '66 Toro says that the hood has to be removed to replace the heater core on cars equipped with AC. It's silent on the procedure for non AC cars. Do you know if the core can be replaced without removing the hood on a 1966 non AC car?

I've been putting it off because I don't want to get partway into the removal of the plenum only to discover that it won't come out without the hood off.

Otto,

I'm not sure why the hood would have to come off in either case, but I need to think about it (mine was obviously torn down all the way, so no issue). Possibly the reason is that you have to remove the hood hinge to get at the squirrel cage/blower motor and take it out.

One other reason I forgot to mention it's worth doing for those with AC is that you'll find plenty of rust on the firewall inside opposite where the evaporator goes from all the water condensation. The box comes appart in 2-3 pieces I think and is fiberglass. Clean it up and replace, but you'll have to replace the seals.

I had to have the heater core replaced on my 69 Toronado with AC there was no need to remove the hood, just one bolt under the heater box just about impossible to refit.

Sorry, I don't know what year E car heater cores moved from the engine compartment
to under the dash. Bruce Roe
