final drives
Will a complete final drive from a 78 Toro fit in my 67? I would like to have the taller gearing.

Re: final drives
The 66-67 final drive with 3.21:1 ratio use a different cross over shaft with a different
support on the right side of the engine, and the bracket and bolt support on the left
are also different. If you get this complete set of parts, they can be swapped. Don't
forget your trans dipstick will be involved.
Not sure, but there might be some difference in the drive plates to the half shafts
between 66/67 and later years. If so I'd probably put some new holes in the drive
plate to fix it, or use a set of later half shafts. Many (including me) have changed to
using a left half shaft on both sides to eliminate problems with the right side vibration
damper.
The 2.73:1 final drive is certain to save gas and engine wear, but might feel slower.
That issue can be largely cured with an electronic switch pitch controller, which will
utilize that feature in all driving situations, instead of just at idle or near full throttle.
Mine does well with this and a 2.40:1 overall ratio, achieved with reversed POWER
DRIVE chain set (65:57) and a 2.73:1 final drive. Bruce Roe

Re: final drives
Thank you. Does eliminating the torsion dampner affect drive characteristics in any way?
