Any connection between vehicle VIN and engine #

Postby tera155 » Wed Aug 17, 2016 8:58 am

So I was watching old Wayne Carrini on Chasing Classic Cars and he was comparing a serial # on the frame of a Ferrari with the # on the engine block. Which got me thinking -- are there any similar connections on Toro's?

The VIN on my 66 is: 396876M516031 (and I took that off the protecto plate which has it in reverse so I may have transposed a number)

The number on the tag on block is: N 624 834 T
The number on the block behind the water pump is: 389244 D
The number on the castings on the heads is 389 395

All the numbers above tell me it is an authentic 425 Olds Toro engine -- but is there a way to confirm it is the original engine for that VIN?

Thanks for the input. Rds, Thad Dupper, Colorado

I have looked at the Protecto Plate which does show in addition to the VIN the engine serial number and what I believe to be the transmission serial number -- OJ-17831 (my care has a 68 Eldo tranny now with an AJ in the serial number.

So I believe the answer to my question is the serial numbers of the engine and the tranny are on the protector plate along with the VIN -- I haven't checked but I suspect these same numbers are on the VIN plate in the Engine bay on the firewall.
