Re: Decode 1966 Data plate?

I just picked up my first Toronado today - a 66 deluxe, and joined this forum.

I've always admired these cars.

Thanks to this site & forum I was able to decode the trim tag on the firewall (!)....except for one character: TRIM 053-D. What's the "D"??

I also suspect the transmission ATF cooler is leaking coolant into the transmission. Is that a full rebuild or a flush, if trans is working okay?
anything special to know about overhaul, or essentially same as TH400?

thanks!!

Don't really know for sure, but think the D stands for dual headrests for the Strato Bench seat.

Thanks for the reply, Doc.

It has no headrests. Interior is original- or appears so.

I saw this on another site, but it appears to relate to vinyl, standard interior. Not sure if my "D" code relates to vinyl/fabric deluxe interior, which it is.

Factory Headrest Trim Code
(Letter appears after 3-digit trim code)
A Without Headrests
E With Headrests

Have you found water/coolant in the transmission? Of course you'll need to pull your radiator and have the tanks removed and rebuilt if the coolant and oil are mixing? Is there any ATF in the coolant? That will be easy to spot as it will be globs of red floating at the top of the radiator.

I would completely drain the transmission, including the torque converter. Replace the filter as well.

I thoroughly flushed the transmission....ran about 30 quarts through it, after first dropping the pan and replacing the filter. The radiator had been apart recently (seller's comments and physical evidence) and I pressure tested it and the cooler thoroughly before reconnecting it to the system. Found no ATF in the coolant, but like I said, the radiator has been apart recently, coolant is/was new.
Looks good so far. Shifts perfectly. Thanks!

My data plate shows 052-D -- I believe it is for green trim (which it is) and the "D" stands for deluxe.

My care does not have the headrest option either.
