Will a 1970's olds 442 sport steering wheel fit my '66 Toro?

Postby 762 » Sat Oct 18, 2014 9:01 pm

I'm thinking about swapping the steering wheel from my '66 Toro and replacing it with a early 70's Rally Sport steering wheel from an olds 442/Cutlass F85. I'm hoping it will be a straight swap, anyone know if this will work?

As far as I know, these will not work with a tilt/telescopic column, which the vast majority of Toros had. Does your have a tilt/tele column?

Maybe somebody else was able to make it work?

That's a cool steering wheel but the original '66 wheel is cooler.

I agree Otto,
I do like the way my original steering wheel looks, it's just a bit too thin and smooth. I'd even say it's slippery.
I'd like to have a thicker wheel that still looks good and haven't found any thing except tips one. Anyone know where I can get a wrap like made? this looks pretty bad ass.

You guys are right, I'm definitely keeping my original steering wheel.

Thanks NRGF, his prices are much better than anyone else I've seen so far (£99.00).
Talked to some guy from Dallas Custom Steering wheel and they wanted ~$380. That's crazy.

I might track down a saddle maker and see if I can get a price from him. I'm in central Pa and there's lots of Amish folks around here.

That's funny that you find the steering wheel too thin and want a thicker one. All I drive are old cars with thin wheels. When I get in a modern car with fat wheels of small diameter I feel very uncomfortable.

I like the ridges on the back side of the old ones.

Even my '79 F100 has a wheel that's slightly fatter than the '77 F100 I owned and it bugs me. It's also slightly smaller in diameter and that bothered me a lot at first, too.

Now my '56 Cadillac, that's what you call a steering wheel!

That's a beautiful steering wheel in your Cadillac. It reminds me of the wheel on a yacht. Very classy design

Thanks.

Well, it's named Bismarck after the battleship so that's sort of a yacht!

It's the easiest car to drive that I've ever owned. Steering is tight with no slop but easily done with one hand (or finger) at any speed.
