I do know that there are several factors that can explain why the car gets such good mileage. For one thing Oldsmobile engines are particularly efficient for the time. Then there is the lack of emissions controls and the high compression ratio.
Finally, when I get 18 MPG, I am driving in something of a hypermiling kind of way. I accelerate smoothly and drive at moderate speeds. Not too hard, really, as it is very relaxing and the car somehow encourages both aggressive driving when in the mood and smooth, relaxing driving when not.
I have yet to determine highway mileage, and when I say city I really mean country road which is not so much stop and go as much as it is 40 - 60 MPH for extended periods.
So I suspect it depends on your driving style to some degree.

- Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011. - Location: Gig Harbor, WA

A thought occurs... xGecko, did you replace that speedo gear yet? If not, then our odometers are off as well, wich would show a higher fuel economy than actual by the same margin.
Our speedometers are off by you thought your speedo was off by about 10%, one of those speed-sensing sogns aid I was going 34 when speedo saod 40, so that's nearly 20%. When you do the math, it works out that we've probably got the same economy as everyone else...

No, I have not yet replaced the gear, but I am not going by that measure. I am not at an official mpg rating right now, I am just going by what I did years ago and the length of the drives I was doing. I used the route mileage and the amount of fuel to generate a rough mileage value.
Next year I will do a proper test once I get the fuel injection installed.
In the past I was able to calculate it pretty well, I got around 18 average if I did not get aggressive based on known distances similar to the above method.
I have a number of regular cruise routes mapped out now where I live and given the length of the drives and the amount of gas I am using it is pretty much the same. Go easy and these motors will give great mileage, get on it and you will go broke fast...
