Tire sizes

Postby Jamin1968 » Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:25 pm

Wondering about tire sizes. Just painted the factory rims, wondering what my options for tires are. It came with 225/70/15 but most of the tires in that size seem to be light truck tires. I'm looking for whitewalls - any thoughts, ideas?

Second question - are there any good places to get chrome trim rings and center caps? Are there any special considerations for these? Do I need a special width for the trim rings?

btw - she's a '69

Thanks in advance!

I think the standards are 235/75/15's but I've always put 255/70/15's on mine--BEEFY--no clearance issues.

BF Goodrich makes 'em for cars. I think Kelly also has a listing for that size.

Good to know. The 235s may be easier to find. Right now I'm just looking for some used meats to roll her around the driveway. Thanks for the help!

Years Owned: My first Toronado was a 1968 W-34 with the bucket seats and center console... (weeps gently) It was a New England rustbucket in 1982 after less than 14 years. So sad. But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011.

I have used 235/60-15s in the past, they improve handling at the expense of needing to correct the speedo and a bit of a lower ride. This time around I went with 235/70-15s as my '68 came with the 255/70s and I do not like how the tires sit; they look like they might have too much roll to the side when cornering and so I felt they might actually reduce performance. The 235/70s seem like a nice compromise for now.

Ultimately I hope to commission a set of custom wheels. The real hard part is what design to go with and whether to go with 18" or 17". 18" might be a bit much given how much stress these things have to deal with. Spoke pattern is also a tough one, these cars do not look good with many of the more common patterns so I will have to take a good pic and have my wife Photoshop some designs in to see what they will look like.
I have my Fuel Injected Toronado. Life is good! 8-)
