1969 Fuel Tank

Postby NicolasB » Mon Mar 01, 2021 3:11 pm

Hello, does anyone have a fuel tank for a ‘69 Toronado in good shape? Mine is dented inwards and I talked to a long-time mechanic of ours and he said that it’s better to get a replacement instead of having it fixed since repairing it wouldn’t really fix the problem of it denting again easily. Could an Eldorado tank or one from a different car possibly fit in mine? Thanks!

Kinda hard to tell but you see that it’s dented (at a tire shop, not at the mechanic’s place).

Is it leaking from the dent or anywhere else? If there aren't any other problems with it I'd leave it alone unless you find a nice one. The problem is that new ones aren't made so you'll be getting another 50 year old tank.

Gas Tank Renu restores tanks to better than new. http://www.gastankrenu.com

I don't know if an Eldorado tank is the same or not. You'd have to compare GM part numbers.

Try John Dorcey. He probably has one in his stash of 50 cars. Check Parts section for contact info

I contacted Gas Tank Renu and they said it might be around $600-$800 to repair the tank if they can do it, which is a lot more than I expected haha. So hopefully John has some spares for a reasonable price or I could find a tank that could fit a 1st gen Toronado.

Wow! That's definitely a last resort option.

Do you want to replace it just for aesthetic reasons or is it leaking?

That is about what they charged me for several different tanks. Bruce Roe

Bruce, how long have your tanks been "Renu'd"?

I assume you're happy with the results or you'd be warning us off.

From what I see from the outside, it's aesthetic, but our mechanic says that we should replace it. At this point it has no leaks, so I could just clean it and protect it from rust for now and wait to see what the condition of Dorcey's tank is (he's going to send pics and asks $300 for it excluding taxes). I hope these dents did not damage the fuel sending unit because I'm planning on rebuilding it.

So John does not have anymore fuel tanks unfortunately, but he gave me really good news: he sent a couple of them to Fusick Automotive a couple of months ago and they said that they are in the making of new reproduction tanks! I called them today to ask them about it and they said that it's true and that it will take about a year to 18 months for the final product to arrive. If you guys are looking for one or think you will need one soon then I would suggest calling Fusick and telling them to put your name on their list.

Did he tell you how much they were going to cost?
