1966 Toronado in Sweden

So, after 20 years I own a 1966 Toro, I first sat in one when
I was 16 years old and I knew that one day I will own one.
I have owned tons of american cars, from a 1971 Chevelle SS454
to a 2005 Mustang GT, but my dream has always been a 1966
Toronado (but I love all years of the model but the 66 is something special)

I have searched everywhere for a decent car, my mother in law lives in L.A so
I haved craigslisted and ebayed for Toros since forever, I have even written letter to owners
of such cars in Sweden asking them to sell it to me with no luck....

But a couple of weeks ago i found a 1966 wich haved lived its life in Long beach, Ca
from 1966 to 2008 when a guy from Sweden bought it and had it shipped to Sweden , but
the car suffered some damage in the container freight and the guy never got reimbursed
for the damage so he lost his passion for the car, so after sitting in his shop for three years i bought
it.....Started up right away, soundeed smooth, good handling, nice brakes, but Noooo Power.
Somebody had disabled the secondaries in the quadrajet, removing the secondarie metering rods,
cam, and some how adjusted the switch pitch control to make the qjet not activate the secondaries,

So right now it has a factory rebuilt Q-jet, everything in the ignition new, work in oprogress etc etc\...


to make a long story short, first pic is before, second pic is after a little TLC, car has original paint,
66k miles, auqa cloth interior, just love this car, it is SO beautiful...

Just decoded my cowl tag, indeed my 1966 was finished
in porcleain whit and blue cloth/vinyl interior...
I was hoping it to be a non Deluxe since it has
manual windows, but it is a De luxe....still love
it though:)

got it running on the secondaries a couple of days ago...what a difference!

now the car will do this when WOT from a standstill :)

Boy this forum is dead....Anyways, found an unused Firestone TFD Tire in my trunk,,NEVER used....

Pretty cool, wish I had 5 of them though, anyone know if I can use G78 Redlines or are they to small?

I know that radials are better but I dont care, I want the old look, cant find any 885-15's

Oh you lucky bastard :P

I was all pumped when I got my toro and took a look in the trunk... and then I found some POS Sears tire that had a great big hole in it :P

The forum kinda runs in spurts... we had alot of posts for a little while there... But, now that I've got my car running, I've got less and less to talk about :P

No idea on that tire though. 235/70 r-15 is what you should be looking for. I'm getting a set of Firestone Firehawk Indy 500's personally. They don't look anything like the original, but they are a Firestone... and they're sexy :P

I just got my secondaries working the other day too... HUUUUGE difference... mine's still only at about 80% though (working on it) and I had to disable my switch-pitch controller to do it... I'll have to fabricate something to make it work properly with the carb I've got....

:) so Im not the only one with a swith pitch that blockes the secondarys, cool.

Do you know if the switch ptich module als controls the kickdown?

cause my kickdown doesnt work and it shifts way to early, I took
the linkage of and just left it in high stall mode to make it run better...

Well, my carburetor isn't original to my Toro. It's from a '66 Olds, but not the Toro. As I understand, the original has a unique throttle lever on the side of it. Mine was so bad, that the primaries weren't even opening all the way.

In order for it to hit it's stop when the throttle is wide open, it has to be as short as it can possibly be adjusted. But, in order for it not to interfere with zero throttle, it must be as long as it possibly can be... :-S

I think I'll make my own rod, with a piece of steel, with a slot cut at one end for the switch to move in. That will be a good bandaid until I can get a proper carb, built by Sparky.


As for the kickdown, I'm not 100% Sure... I have mine completely detatched and it seems to downshift pretty quick when I stomp on the pedal mid-cruise. The service manual indicates that the switch in question does control kickdown though.



Also, fun note... don't drive on that TFD tire >_> I just caused a hell of alot of damage to my '66 when my tread delaminated from one of my tires... It wasn't a TFD, it was a steel belted radial, but it was probably 30 years old. I guess the rubber just rotted. They looked great when I first started driving it (last week) now the tread is pealing off all 5 of them.
