Just took the plunge!

Postby Jamin1968 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 5:03 pm

Greetings! I just took the plunge this week - been looking for something unusual to toy with during what's sure to be another frigid winter here in Wyoming. She's a powder blue '69 Toro - she's got most of the options - or perhaps me being a newbie, they all came with all of the power toys.

I found her sitting just off a local highway in the mud with flat tires and a broken passenger window (I'm looking for one if anyone can help) thanks to some kids and a brick. The good news is, we don't use salt, so there's really no rust except where the vinyl top was removed. The chrome is good and apart from the headliner and some stains, the interior is pretty good with no rips. She's got just over 86,000 miles.

These are great looking, unique cars - just what I was looking for. Now that I have her, I'm glad you all are here. I hope to have the only one at the local shows when she's done.

Here's some pics - this is the way I found her and bought her, in an October snowstorm! It's a long road ahead, but I can't wait until she's eating up the ashpalt!

I've started a blog to document bringing the Toro back to life. It's still in its infancy, but here's the link. I'll also post odds and ends that I find and hopefully some new information.

It's been several months now since the Toro has brightened my garage. I've made some progress including a major overall cleaning, tearing out jerry-rigged wiring and an old stereo (I have the original AM radio). Even with the official service "bible," that dash is a pain in the @#$ to get out!

Now I'm rebuilding the Quadrajet. Still hasn't run, but I'm getting close. Once the carb is done, I need to run a new fuel line, then we'll see if she starts!

I've made some great discoveries though - all power equipment works (except the clock) and I got all of the lights to finally work, so that's a big relief.

Yeah, I pulled the dash not too long ago... Major pain. Would have been alot easier if I had removed the speedo cable from the transmission first, as that was the shortest thing.

Since you've got the dash out, I would fix the clock. They typically just need to be cleaned and oiled. Possibly a new magnetic coil that you can make yourself. I'm doing mine righr now...

Agreed, though I was considering the quartz clock conversion kit on ebay ... for now though, I'm probably going to put it together and concentrate on getting her running and look for a new dash face plate - at some point, the radio area was chopped a bit, so it doesn't look that great anymore. The dash is a lesson in patience for sure!

Naaw, don't do that... The toro's clock, like all of its components, is very high quality. Putting a cheap plastic movement in just doesn't do it justice. But, yeah, get her running first. this is the first time i've actually worked on a clock, but it is trivially easy to do on this one, there's not alot to it

Yeah, I took down the site - I haven't been doing enough work on her to make the site interesting.
