My Toro is the standard black satin on the header tanks. The fins aren't visible so I don't worry about the color. My Cadillac is stain black and light spray over the front of the fins. Again, it's not noticeable so the color isn't that important to me. I think they may have just had a light spray over them when new but certainly not enough paint to glob up or get into the folds of the fins. If yours is new or being rebuilt, I'd leave it the way the shop sends it to you.

I lightly painted my finned drums with Eastwoods cast iron color. They'll stay nice looking for a while anyway. We were careful not to put a thick coating of paint on those. Agree about the ceramic paint. I guess I don't have a picture of those or I'd include it. They look great.

Sorry guys - I meant to say what are your thoughts about using radiator paint on the finned drums? Only if I could find it in silver.

This afternoon I pulled the front seat and the foot pan under the mat in the driver's footwell. I found some minor pinholes here and there, and the driver's toe board is the worst - in particular the area where the base of the gas pedal mounts. I thought the floors were solid - turns out a little work needs to be done. I will snap a few pics later.
Next order of business is to wire wheel the topside of the floors and assess the damage. Once some fresh metal is welded in I will probably use some type of rust converter prior to getting new sound/hear insulation and carpeting.

I use the regular rust converter they sell and Home Depot and Lowes. Even NAPA sells it. I think it's a lot better than POR 15 for the money. You aren't going to be driving this car under water so a really good basic rust encapsulation product works fine.
I've never had a problem with the stuff even with garden tools that are exposed to abuse and moisture.

Thanks Otto - I will check that out. I snuck into the garage a bit ago and found the rust is a bit worse that I had thought. Hole around where the gas pedal mounts, and the floor is rusted thru above the rear support channel. Here are some pics. I have to get my welding buddies over here or bring my car to them...

I would also check your front windsheld to be sure it's sealed properly and not leaking. If they are original, they develop leaks and that goes down through the cowl (rusting cowl) and into wiring, etc. on dash. That may have been the source of the water for rusting there.

Thanks Doc. I think the PO had some repairs done around the windshield area and a new windshield weatherstrip installed prior to the repaint. The seal and surrounding metal looks pretty good to me from the outside, but I will get up under the dash and take a look just in case.
I found pine needles and other debris around the base of the gas pedal where the damage occurred. Hopefully the damage all occurred prior to the repairs.
One good thing is the car sat outside for 4 years before I bought it, and I found zero moisture inside the car.

Work and other things are keeping me behind schedule on this project, but I still need to start thinking about getting the motor pulled and rebuilt. The grille and front bumper are already off the car. Would it make things easier if I removed the front fenders? Curious as to what you guys have done in your cars. I have an engine crane already, as well as a plate that will bolt to the intake manifold. It has worked great for me in the past, but all I have used it on were small block Fords. Will this big block be too heavy for using the intake lift plate? I don't want to strip the threads and can use a chain if needed.
