The weather was so nice today that I slacked on the house chores ( who needs clean clothes anyway?!?! ) and after dinner, while my wife and Hannah went to pamper the horse, Lilly and I headed down to the garage to work on El Toro. I didn't feel like working underneath, so I figured we would work on the interior. The rear seat is out, so we took out all the nasty underlayment from back there. Lilly used the wire brush to scrub lots of crud off the floor, and then we vacuumed out the goodies.

The package tray had some really horrible looking speakers on it, so they had to go. Once the package tray was clean I pulled both rear ashtrays and Lilly polished them. Next came the interior door chrome. It looks 50 years old but now it shines a little. After cleaning the interior quarters, door panels, and front seat with Aerospace 303 we called it a night. Hopefully tomorrow we will have time to clean the rear seat and install it ( and get it out of my way in the garage ).

Baby steps...

You might be aware of this product already but when you're ready to put the interior back together, you may want to insulate the floor and firewall with HushMat - a less expensive version of Dynamat. http://hushmat.com/

Here's a carpet source:

Thanks for the info, Otto. I checked out the Hushmat site. Looks like a good product and cheaper than Dynamat but still not cheap! I still might give it a try since I want the exhaust to rumble on the outside ( probably eliminating resonators ) but be quiet and solid inside the cabin.

On the carpet link you gave me - I see they have different grades available. What do you recommend? The loop style that I'm removing from my car is on the thin side and the fibrous underlayment is awful. Is it worth it to get the Mass Backing? What do you think is better - the 80/20 loop or the nylon loop? I'm assuming the cut pile style is not correct for a '66? The heel pad is definitely not stock looking. I guess I will need to find a factory style heel pad and attach it myself? Thanks again for the help buddy!

Last night Lilly and I got a little work done. We cleaned and installed the back seat. The carpet is toast so we started taking it out. It pretty much disintegrated in my hands. The power front seat isn't working so I'm having a bit of trouble getting the rear bolts out. Once the seat is out we will clean the floorboards and probably brush on some Rustoleum.

This afternoon I bead blasted one brake drum, 2 rear bumper brackets, and both of the MASSIVE front bumper brackets. Holy cow that's some heavy metal! This week I will blast the other 3 drums and get them turned. Then the drums and brackets will get primed and painted.

I strongly advise against painting your drums.

Paint acts as an insulator and will slow the dissipation of heat from the brake drums. That's why virtually every brake drum you've ever seen is unpainted, rusted iron.

Some paint, such as aluminum paint, will actually reflect heat back into the drum making the situation even worse.

There appears to be no paint or clear coat finish on my car's drums and there is a high likelihood that they are the originals. Unless someone can show that Toronado drums had some sort of painted finish from the factory, I would just leave your drums clean and natural and install them as is.

Hey thanks for the good advice Otto. For the drums I'm considering ceramic metallic coating like they use on headers.

I bought 5 chrome wheels today. They aren't perfect but should clean up nicely. Now I need to fix the busted tabs on my trim rings and find 1 or 2 hubcaps. Anyone have any lying around?

NO! NO! NO!

That's the absolute WORST coating to put on drums. Ceramic does not conduct heat! Ceramic is used on headers to hold the heat in the exhaust system and keep it out of the engine bay. It will not conduct heat. Leave your drums alone.

Ceramic tiles were used on the space shuttle to keep the extreme heat OUT of the shuttle during re-entry. It will do the same on your drums by keeping the heat inside your drums instead of allowing the heat to be conducted away as the drums are supposed to do.

Jeez I had that backwards - thanks for setting me straight. What are your thoughts on radiator paint? If I could find it in silver...
