New 66 owner here

Postby brian66toro » Thu Jul 03, 2014 8:07 pm

I notice more than a few Cadillac owner's here by name or by screen name.

I just became a 1966 Toronado owner. One of my dream cars and one that I feel has fantastic styling and features. I always loved these cars and was recently asked by a Cadillac club member to look at one that he found online. He's 1200 miles away, but the car was 20 minutes from my house. He decided against buying the car, but I was so taken by it's good looks and originality, even though it needs work in every area, I bought it for myself.

Although it's a bone stock 66 Toronado with 64,000 miles on it, there are a few issues.

Some rust here and there, in the door jambs, on the rear quarter and elsewhere, even though the photo makes it look quite nice, it needs paint and other work to be anywhere near show quality.

Naturally the AC does not work, but all of the parts are there, and it may just need a shot of freon.

The big problem is that when hot, at an idle in drive, the oil pressure light comes on. It goes out as soon as you take off from a light, but this needs to be addressed. The former owner tried a new sender and 10-40 oil, but the problem persists.

I have a few Cadillacs that I am also working on so I cannot dive in to it right away, so it is sitting in the garage. One problem can be that the oil pickup is clogged by nylon cam gear debris, but dropping the pan to inspect and clean is not an easy job on these.

I'd love to find a set of correct black floor mats, and a driver's side door pull if anyone has any of these items. A working AM-FM would be nice too.

I am glad to be a 66 Toronado owner and will be joining the club shortly.

I wouldn't necessarily trust the idiot light to give you accurate oil pressure readings.

If you're concerned, I'd install an oil pressure gauge. You could even install one temporarily just to get a feel for what's happening.

That's for sure. I will be installing a mechanical gauge under the hood as a temporary way to see what's going on at an idle when it is fully warmed up. There are no taps or noises at all to indicate that there is an oil problem, but the light indicates this.

It may be a while before I get to this, but the car is safe in my garage and I am glad to be a 66 Toro owner!

What Cadillac(s) do you own?

I've been driving a '56 Coupe DeVille as my only car since 2001. My '66 Toro is the only other car I own. I bought it a few months ago in February.

Yes, I'd say that's a few Cadillacs.

I to have always liked the looks of the first year Toro but never thought about buying one. I happened to see mine in a friend's garage. I was knocked out by the color and its overall excellent condition so when he told me I could drive it home for a price I couldn't refuse, I bought it.

Thar she blows!
