Basic: Internet Slang

Postby toro_mike » Wed Jun 17, 2009 9:58 am

Another basic communication device used on forums and online is Internet Slang. The most well known example of this is LOL (Laugh Out Loud). It is used to abbreviate common statements and feelings to speed things up. Teenagers are fluent in these, while the rest of us keep playing catchup. Once again, Wikipedia comes to the rescue with a huge list of slang and their definitions: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Internet_slang

Here are some common examples:
ROFL: Rolling on the floor laughing
ASAP: As soon as possible
ATM: At the moment
AWOL: Absent Without Leave
B4: Before
bump: Used to get a thread back to the top of the list if the question was not answered.
CU: See you
CUL8TR: See you later
CYA: See ya OR Cover Your Ass
L8: Another way to say see you later
ETA: Estimated time of arrival
FAQ: Frequently Asked Question(s)
FWIW: For what it's worth
FYI: For your information
gratz: Congratulations
GBTW: Get back to work
handle: Name used in online chat, (AKA nick(name), alias, screen/user name)
IANAL: I am not a lawyer
IMO: In my opinion
IMHO: In my humble / honest opinion
IMNSHO: In my not so humble opinion
IMAO: In my arrogant opinion
JK or j/k: Just kidding, or joke

That's it for now! Enjoy
Mike
