Frame repair

Postby 1970w34 » Sun May 13, 2012 1:57 pm

Been restoring one of my GT's (Agean Aqua, white top, interior, stripes) and have been making some good progress of late. Body is off and on a cart, totally stripped of everything but paint. Even the wiring harness was taken out (and in one piece!). I today finished repairing both side of the rear frame and it went quite smooth. Even had to use a chisel to finish the cut where the steel overlaps. The holes also came out very nice. Soon I'll sandblast the frame and have a go at painting it!

I did learn one thing....if I was a better welder I'd have more grinding wheel left.

Are you talking about where the forward part of the rear leaf springs bolt onto the "frame" These Toros seem to love to rust here. I would love to see a picture of what you did as mine as some rust there. Not horrible, but it needs to be fixed. Also what guage and type of steel did you use? where did ya get it?? Please post pics !!! :)

Where the body mount bolts on--the very end of the frame--the springs bolt outside and a bit forward from that. I made an exact pattern from thin cardboard and cut out the rotted part. I think it was 14 gauge mild steel, I just matched it up from some scraps I had laying around once I cut back to the solid thickness. I mig-welded in the patches and ground them smooth, then located the holes (bought a frame chart off of evil-bay) and cut them with a brand new 1&1/2 inch bi-metal hole saw with a piece of wood jacked up and backing the hole--turned out great.

I do not know how to post pics but I did take some regular film of it. I can take some digital pics of the finished product if you can coach me on how to post them.

Yeah, I can do that this weekend. I have some other pics on my phone, can you post those if I send them to you?

Sent some pics, they may not be the best as the lighting was not optimal and the camera seems to be working like shyt. You'll get the idea though. As I stated, I ground the inside welds smooth but let the exposed outside beads to mimic the original factory stick welds. Let me know if you need something else to clarify. Thanks, Carmen.
