Perhaps a silly question, but will throw it out here. I've been looking at a '67 on-line that is currently for sale. The seller tells me that the engine is original to the car, but I'm rather skeptical because of the photo below. I've never seen a '66 or '67 that didn't have the dual-snorkel air cleaner housing. It is most likely a motor from a 68-70, but wondering if there's any chance at all that some late-build 67s might have an engine like this? If I get one of these cars, I want one that is as close as possible to the model-year standard. Any insight appreciated.

Well, im not an expert, but that looks like the appropriate engine. The oil-fill tube looks just like my '66, and the color is usually a good tipoff unless it has been painted. Toro's were the only car to have a slate blue engine. That being said, that aircleaner is from a much later model small block. Looks just like the one on my 82 el camino.

Unsure about casting#s until I dig out a 67 service manual but it looks like a 425 but a 2nd gen air cleaner.

As far as the steering wheel goes, I've never seen one that wasn't cracked. That being said, this place here restores them. And if you look down near the bottom of their gallery, there's a Toro wheel even.

If your '67 engine problem isn´t finished:

All 66 and 67 Oldsmobile 425 V-8 can be identified by an engine unit number that stamped on a machined pad on the front of the RH cylinder head (behind the alternator). A Toronado engine should begin with a single letter prefix (ident the basic engine displacement), followed by unit number and a further letter (ident for a special high performance version)



Should be then:

1966 and 1967 - N (unit number) T

The 425 block casting number is located at the front of the block, between the intake manifold and the timing chain cover.



1966 to 1967 - 389244

Casting number of 1966 cylinder head is located just below the valve cover in the middle of the head on the exhaust outlet.



Should be 1966 - 389359 or 1967 - 394548

From 1968 till 1976 the 455 Toronado engine unit numbers are stamped onto the oil fill tube (should not used for identification because it is easily switched!).

1968 - US or UT
1969 - US, UT, UV or UW
1970 - US, UT, UV or UW
