I could use some help to ID Engine.

Postby UV520 » Thu Sep 22, 2016 7:19 am

Hello everyone,

As you can see I am new here. FYI - I am a retired ASE mechanic who was also a mechanic in the US Army.
I have what I believe to be is a 1969 or 1970 Toronado 455 power-plant in a rare vehicle that I want to fully restore.
It had not been on the road for well over 20 years when I purchased it back in 2013 and towed it home.
Since then, without knowing a lot about it; I have invested a lot of time and money getting it running the best I could and back on the road where it belongs. But sadly it overheats... I am working on that now with plans to ad a two speed or stage hydraulic cooling fan setup the the Flex-a-lite Radiator I already have..

Now I don't know much about Olds products. I worked as a line mechanic for Chevrolet for ten years.
I know where to find all the important numbers on Chevys. I need help with the Olds 455...

I will go outside and try to get all the numbers I can find.

I could use some help to ID what year engine it truly is for getting the proper parts and giving it a good tune up.

I also need to find out what kind of exhaust manifolds I have and where I can find some good ones. Mine are cracked and leak.

I would like to know where I could find a good used GM HEI Dist that will work in the year 455 I end up having..

Thank you for your help.
Sincerely, Tony

Very Tight Fit.
And Why I am looking into a serpentine belt setup.
I want to add AC if i can and a PS pump to run the Hydraulic cooling fan and the hydro-boost power brake setup I hope to install.

There are companies that rebuild distributors. What's wrong with yours?

DAVE's small-body HEIs
24 Buffalo Lane
Yerington, Nevada, 89447
775- 722-3294
info@davessmallbodyheis.com

Here's another company that can probably help you with your dizzy.

Your picture mentions a serpentine belt setup. Search this site. There are a couple guys who've already done it. No sense reinventing the wheel.

Thank you.

Distributor = Points (I want something more reliable, less fuss, and with a better spark.)

Serpentine Belt = That is why I am here. Because I like what some have already came up with and I do not have the space to use most of the aftermarket ones I have found thus far.

Tony,

The first one I posted, Dave's Small Body HEI, converts your points type dizzy into a GM HEI dizzy. That way, it looks stock (not that it matters in your case) and installs and fits correctly because it's the correct dizzy for the engine.

Same here. Who knows? Send him an email and/or call him. I hope he's still in business. He comes well recommended.

Engine ID -

Do Olds engine codes tell you what year engine you have? Or do they simply put you in a given set of years that your engine was used?
I really would like to know what year engine I have and stop the guess work. Some people have told me A and others tell me B...
Where are all the important numbers to help me find out what year engine I have?

Thank you.

Somewhere on this forum is a thread discussing engine and head ID and where to find the numbers. Also of importance to you is what transmission you have. There should be an ID plate on the trans itself.
