What tires to go with?

Postby torogt » Sun Jan 26, 2014 6:27 pm

Getting ready to buy tires but can't decide on 235/75r15 with white walls or go bigger 255/70/15 BFG's I like the look of the white wall but like the size of the 255/70's I understand Diamond tire make a 255/70 white wall but they are pricey!!! what anyones opinion?

Hi Shane:
I have a 70 Toro GT and have the (larger than normal) 235 tires on it; I wish I could tell you specifically where I read it, but I thought 235 is as big as you can go on these Gen 1 Toros.
Can anyone else in the TOA help out here?

All of my 1970 GT's have gotten 255/70/15's with no issues whatsoever--looks tough!

BF Goodrich, Kelly and I think Remington are some of the "brand" names that supply this size.

But it is what infected me and before I knew it I had another '68, a '69, a '70 and eventually inherited a friend's '67 and another friends '73. After buying my brand new Grand Prix in 1988 I retired the last of my Toronados and pulled the 455 I had rebuilt along the way and put it into storage in a friend's barn where it is to this day.
In Mid September of 2010 I happened to see a repeat of the show where Jay Leno did his 66 Toronado and had an instant remission of the disease which resulted in my purchase of a 1969 in very good condition. I am now in the process of fully rehabilitating it and hope to have it on the road in the spring of 2011.

I have 235/70 BFGs on my car and they are fantastic. I am not much of a whitewall guy so the raised white letters suit me fine. Performance is great, although they are soooo easy to spin at launch. Not much I can do about that given the torque-monster under the hood....

I've got 225/70/R15s on my 66, and feel they are adequate. I already had them new and my car needed tires right away. I'd rather something a tad larger.

How are those 255s working out? How accurate is your speedo? Do they sit well on the rim?

Any chance you could take some pics? I have 235s on mine now but my parts car came with 255s. Can't make up my mind if I like it or am comfortable with the fitment.

Mine has 235 -75 whitewalls on it. They fill up the wheel well without looking freakishly large or too small.

I haven't mounted them yet, still getting my rims blasted and painted but from my understanding they are very minimal difference in height but are a little wider.

The diameter varies slightly by manufacturer. I have a tire size chart showing the section width, tread width and overall diameter of various tires.

The BF Goodrich 235/75-15 is 28.9" diameter with a tread width of 6.6"

The same tire in a 255/70-15 is 29.1" diameter with a tread width of 7.6"

So you get a full inch more tread on the road but only increase the diameter .2" - that's 1/5th of an inch. That means the rubber is only a 10th of an inch closer to the wheel well all the way around.

The section width (fat part of the the sidewall cross section) is also nearly an inch wider on the 255s. On some cars this interferes with steering and suspension parts but is supposed to be OK on the Toro.

Are you going to mount them black walls or white letters? Or did you find white walls?
