W34 cars

After the last two drivers with the W34 articles it made me wonder how many of the 70 W34 cars could be left? could it be more or less than half of what was produced? it seems that the 68-69 cars know to be left is only around a 1/4 of production could that be so for the 70 w34/GT cars? I have one of the 70 cars, it does have the OM trans code and matches the Vin# but it is not a matching number engine

Hard to say with certainty but of the 5341 built I'd think at least 10 percent are still with us, complete, matching numbers and all--though the conditions are often poor.

The engines on many first Gen Toronado's have been pulled and transplanted to cutlass and street rods over the years unfortunately, leaving more than a few abandoned or non "numbers matching".

I'll take any W34 car even without matching # engine because It's still a W34 car and I don't plan on selling it but just enjoy driving and showing it, the engine going into my car is a correct 1970 Toronado engine that came out of my parts car that was in really bad shape except the engine was good. # matching is not that big of a deal to me!

The "first time" I saw a W-34 455 motor, back in August of 1988, was at a car show in Berwick, Maine. The motor was in a white 1955 Olds Super 88 2-dr hardtop. The killer was this tolted W_34 example was a blue 1968 with bucket seats and console.

The numbers on my OM trans are 3om608070 70-om 2255 the vin on my car also ends with 3om608070 but the engine going back into my car is 3om600736 that came out of my parts car unless i can track down the original engine

Finding the original motor, r-i-g-h-t good luck with that ... it is unfortunate that so many Toros were sacrificed (more like murdered) for their motors, because it was said they were sooo much better 'b e t t e r' IMO the Cutlass people (in the words of Slim Pickens/ Blazing Saddle) we'd been sucked in! With all of the 455 in 88's 98's be it 2 /4 bbl carbs that were and still are available they were really much easier to find and pull.
There are 3 things that sets one motor (any motor of a given displacement) apart from and another: compression, cam and carburetor and in any combination thereof. Which in the process of being rebuilt are/can be changed to suit the buyer builders needs or desire so in all likelihood it is no longer what it was, now its just a block out of a Toro.

I was told the original engine ended up in a gm truck that had the diesel 5.7 but so far I haven't tracked it down but it's only hear say so i may never find it. the engine going into it is out of a toronado and looking at the vin i would say a very early production?
