Re: Head Gasket Replacement
Update: So I bought the Gates rebuild kit for the steering box and will pick it up today at the post office. The machine shop also gave me a callback and gave me the go on buying the engine parts. He mentioned this during our talk: Pistons and Piston Rings: 0.030” oversize Rods and main bearings: 0....

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
I see, thanks! In terms of looking for a rebuild kit, which brand is best? I see multiple on RockAuto but am not sure which one to get in case I do decide to rebuild the box myself.

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
Okay, and how is BBB’s gear box? I noticed that they sell one new on RockAuto. Is it difficult to rebuild the old one myself?

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
Okay cool, I'll check them out to see what fits my budget. It's pretty limited right now since I have to focus on the parts for the engine, having the block bored and honed, and having the steering gear box rebuilt or replaced. Update: I dropped off the block at the machine shop on Saturday morning ...

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
I see, thank you! We were also looking for a rebuild kit for the original distributor since the internals are worn, but can’t find one. Do any auto parts suppliers sell them for this car? Or is it better buying a new one or remanufactured? I have a new Pertronix Ignitor II in my garage that hasn’t b...

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
This is random, but I forgot to mention a while back when I got the cylinder heads that the machine shop said that I didn’t need to harden the seats on them because apparently Oldsmobile designed the heads on most of their vehicles so well that running unleaded was no issue for them (this goes for ‘...

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
Ah okay, thanks! Yeah we checked it and you were right: there are four areas where the teeth are worn. Not completely gone, but I’d prefer replacing it now that I have the chance. Does it have 166 teeth? I just want to make sure that I find the correct one. Any recommendations are welcome as well. A...

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
Oh I actually checked Summit; is that part compatible with other cars as well? Like not Toronado specific?

Re: Head Gasket Replacement
So the project is no longer under hiatus now that I have the mechanic to help me start the rebuild process. We removed the engine last night and are going to take it to the machine shop later this week, but in the meantime he gave me the task of looking around for a few more new parts since now we c...
